Reference —  Mullite crystals
Crystals of aluminum silicate that start to form in clay as it is fired between 1850° and 2200°F/1010° and 1204°C. These crystals strengthen stoneware and porcelain when fully developed at high temperatures and also help in the interaction that unites high-fire glazes and high-fire clay bodies.
